In a Workgroup, XP uses simple file sharing by default.
With simple file sharing, users connecting to an XP
machine though the network always use the guest acount.
Which means you have no control over who can access a
share. Either everyone on the network can or no one can.
Article 290403 tells how to turn off simplified sharing in
XP Pro but it doesn't say it works in Home edition. On
several XP pro machines I've controled share access by
removing the Everyone access and adding access for users I
want to give access.

But in XP home, anytime I remove the Everyone access, no
one can access the share. It's the same with share
permissions or NTFS permissions. It's like simple file
sharing is enabled even after changing the registry as per
290403.

Is there anyway to control share access in XP home? Or is
it by design to get you to pay the extra bucks for XP Pro?
