prefetch

Is it true that you can errase all of the files found in
the prefetch? What about the exe files that are found in
this location? The reason I ask is that I suspect that
there are a number of viruses and unauthorized programs
running on my computer. I need to know how to get rid of
anything that is not vital to running the windows
application.
