AutoUpdate Download/Install on set schedule

I have a few questions concerning how the automatic download & install on a
schedule works for XP Professional. My questions are this:
1) Do I have to be logged onto my machine at the set day/time for this
process to happen?
2) If my machine is off at the set day/time, does XP check for new updates
once the machine is powered on?
