I have read elsewhere that you should first turn off system restore, then clean and check for viruses, then turn system restore turned back on.

I ran Norton recently and discovered that I am infected with the
dowloader.trojan virus. I followed the procedures to rid myself of this
virus, however the virus was located in an archive folder in my "_Restore"
directory. This was a problem for me, because the directions Norton gave to
get rid of the virus did not apply to a file in this directory (there was no
reference to a registry item). I am running Windows XP. Anything anyone
can to do help me get rid of this trojan would be appreciated. Thanks!
