(1) i updated the bios and every firmware i have a few
weeks ago when i bought the computer. it's a pretty old
laptop.

(2) yeah, i know about possible hard drive failure (which
this problem has hastened i'm sure), but it's not like i
can do anything other than back up my data and wait for it
to happen. lucky for me this computer was practically
free.

yeah, it took me like a week to figure out that it was one
of the security updates. i ran full scandisk twice and it
showed nothing. the partition is fat32 so perhaps i
should also try spinrite...
