Question re. shared folders

I have a question about shared folders and security. I have an old junker
computer that I'm using with XP Pro as a file server in a home setting. The
folder I have shared is accessable by the other network units just fine.

Being the tweaker that I am, I fooled around with that computer's security
(turned off the simple sharing, as I'm more used to 2K advanced as a
server). Ever since then, it's been acting.. odd.

The server occasionally downloads files and drops them in that shared
folder. The other computers on the network can access that folder, but not
the newer files that were added. I have to unshare the folder then re-share
it. Then everyone can access the new files. Every time new files are
added, I need to do that again.

I turned the simple file sharing back on, I used the computer management
tool to blow away all the shares and I recreated them, but it's still giving
me problems with accessing the files. Unsharing/resharing clears it up.

All the users that are accessing that server (namely me, my wife, and a
friend of mine who drops by from time to time with his wifi laptop) all have
admin rights. Hardware firewall is blocking all file sharing from off the
network; this is purely local. The server is pretty basic; the hardware
router (Microsoft MN500 wireless) is handling NAT, DHCP and so on and so
forth, doesn't get much more basic than that.

Anyone run into this oddity before? And if so, how'd you fix it? A nudge in
the right direction would be very helpful :)
