Try a few things that might help narrow the problem down. Boot into safe
mode. Does the problem still occur? If so, that's bad. You might have to do
a repair of your install (from the XP disk).
Before you do that though, try performing a clean boot of XP, and see if the
problem occurs. Instead of writing out all the intricacies of doing such,
refer to this article:
