You password your profile.
Also you need to be using NTFS and not FAT32 file system.
To check:
Open My Computer, Right click C drive, click Properties.
What does it say by "File System"?
To convert to NTFS:

Windows XP Home:

Windows XP Pro:

However this will not protect your data if the computer is stolen.
For that you need Encryption (Windows XP Pro only)
Be very careful, many people permanently lose documents through
improper use of EFS.
EFS is very good at what it does and there is no back door.
