new virus

How do I go about ridding my system of the 'new' virus
that all of the papers & news reports are talking about?
I don't know the name. Right now I can't access any of my
files or anything at all on my system. I did not download
the patch that I should have from Microsoft that would
supposedly have protected my system from the problem.
Help!
