Not nessesarly, you can go to:
start -> run -> type "cmd" and at the command prompt
type "net stop messenger"

or! to completely get rid of messenger popups, go to my
computer -> control panel -> administrative options ->
services .. find messenger , right click and choose stop,
then right click and choose disable
