I had the very same thing happen and when I tried to use
the steps you outlined below, it gave me a Error 1068:
the dependency service or group failed to start, which I
tracked down to the RPC service. I tried everything to
start this service again, but I could not drill down into
anything. I finally decided to reload Windows XP and am
now stuck in a setup loop and at a loss as to what to do
next. I am also getting an error on this directory
catroot2 which I keep renaming and the install still
fails.
