    Just to add:
    I use both SpyBot & AdAware. They're both good programs, but, reactive in
    their application . Up-front I use WebRoots SpySweeper. It sits in the
    system tray and monitors (and blocks) incoming spyware.Since trialling it, I
    have had no reported instances of spyware using SpyBot, and AdAware at the
    end of an Internet session.
