peer-to-peer only partially working

An earlier posting mentioned loss of file sharing after using windows
update; a similar thing has happened to my small network but I don't believe
it's due to the ICF (which isn't running).

The first machine is Windows XP Pro, the second and third are WinMe and
Win98. Internet Connection Sharing is running and running well (this is set
up on the first computer).

However, file sharing using an ad-hoc, peer-to-peer network is not working
between either the second or third computer and the first but is working
between the second and third. More specifically I can copy files from the
second or third to the first whilst sat at the first but not whilst sat at
the second or third. I can also copy files from the first to the second or
third whilst sat at the first but not whilst sat at the others.

That is, it appears to me that the XP machine is at fault and this only
occurred after updating via Windows
update. Typically attempting a connection from the second machine to the
first machine gives a 'password must be supplied for this connection' error.
If I try to add a new printer I get a 'password must be supplied to connect
to IPC$' error, attempting to print to a printer previously installed and
working gives the password error. I cannot find any place to enter such a
password. Indeed you cannot change the settings for IPC$.

This was all working well before the update -- but -- I cannot say which
update caused it because I installed so many all at the same time. I should
be grateful if anyone has any ideas. Talk about maddening...
