If you have the installation CD of Windows XP you can always boot up from
that CD and try the Repair feature.
This will re-install the OS like a brand new system, but with all your
programs and settings, and files of course.
After that, you can always go and to the SP1 and then the Windows Update and
you will be back on business.
I do that every time I get in problem and I get stuck on something I can not
resole.
