Something to note. Anything that uses the PCI bus (to include RAM, AGP
slot, USB, keyboard and mouse) that goes bad can cause problems such as
this. I have seen a fried network card cause a video card to drop down to
640x480 and 16 color mode and end up with random distortions. I have seen a
keyboard with a bad built in USB Hub cause a soundcard to emit strange
(screaming guinea pig) sounds. If the AV does not show a virus, and you
still get the same problem after a video card and monitor change, start
pulling/ or swapping one component at a time. I know this is tedious, but
you could find out that it is a $30 sound card or $15 keyboard swap out that
changes the situation instead of hundreds of dollars in hard drive
replacement and local pc tech bills. Try to use "know goods", i.e. items
that you have tested on another machine and know that they are good BEFORE
you try them. Also, change one item at a time. If you do more than that
you may not know which of the items was the real problem.
This is not guaranteeing a fix, but it is a good way to find out if it is a
hardware or software fault.
Also, make sure as you do this that you only have keyboard, mouse and
monitor attached to your PC. No other outside devices with the possible
exception of LAN/network/phone connection.
Hope this helps.
