Windows XP - Password Prblems

Have new Gateway 600 w/MS Windows XP Prof.

Set password to prevent unauthorized use.

Next time I tried to login would not accept password.

Went to the password hint, retyped password (proper case
and all) but would still not accept.

Tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete, got login dialogue box,
username=administrator, tried various passwords but
continue to get "System cannot log you in" message".

Any ideas? I dread the thought of calling Microsoft but
that may be my last resort.
