XP let idle locking up

I have an XP machine which was left for an hour over
lunch. Upon return the power indicator was flashing and
when mouse moved/ enter key pressed the power light came
on and monitor light came on but no signal came through to
the monitor and no combination of key presses mouse move
will bring it back to life

any thoughts?
