As a Sys Admin of a small network I'm of the opinion that if you don't need it
don't run it. If you have no real need for the messenger service then kill it
using the Services Applet. And as suggested get yourself a firewall as soon as
possible.

Using a firewall will prove beneficial both now and in the future.
