Your Computer Pro is not much of a pro at all I'm afraid. The presence or
absence of a network has no bearing on whether or not NTFS security (which
drives making folders private) will work.
If you are running XP Pro then in an explorer window go to the tools menu,
then folder options. Scroll to the bottom of the list of options and remove
the tick from "Use Simple Folder Sharing".
You then get a security tab available in a folder's properties and you can
use this to set who has access and who does not. It's slightly more complex
than the one tick "Make this folder private" thing but easy enough to get
the hang of.
If you are running XP Home, then as I recall (don't run home at all so I
can't test this I'm afraid), you need to be in safe mode to get the security
tab in a folder's properties.
In either case... You don't need a network or a book of spells to secure a
folder.
