You can add the netbeui protocol to XP as well if you need it. The method of
installation is explained in the extras folder on the xp cd. I disable netbios
over tcp/ip on all of my machines for security reasons. If you have yours
currently disabled like mine, you'll need to modify the host file in the
windows\inf\etc folder and add both the ip address and machine name of your
other machines on your local network for them to see each other without the hole
from the netbios over tcp/ip active.

Check your protocols. What do you have enabled? My ME/XP network runs fine
now but initially I had problems which were due to running multiple
protocols. ME (98 too?) defaults to NETBeui and XP defaults to TCP/IP. The
fix was to uninstall NETBeui and use only TCP/IP for all machines. Make sure
you enable NetBios over TCP/IP.
