Even though joined into the domain, when you log in as a
local admin how do these apps behave ?
There is a way to provide drivers that are newer than
when XP shipped into the install, but it is not a cake-walk.
Anyway, that fact that your NIC driver must be added
after the fact has nothing to do with the application issues
that you report, all of which seem security related.
For example, if the account in use does not have permissions
to the icon files, the start menu / desktop shows as described,
even though the associations may work (you do have permission
to the targetted application). The grey reg entries are saying your
account does not have permissions to alter, etc.
IOW I would bet at 99.9 % that you have a couple different
things going on and you are just trying to lump them all into
one. The nic is alright, right? Other than having to manually
add it later and then join the domain. So, you just need to
hunt down the missing permissions and grant them.
