    Do you have Windows XP Home or Pro?
    Encrypted File System (EFS) is available with Windows XP Pro and not
    Home.

    Also you must be NTFS not FAT32.
    To check:
    Double click My Computer.
    Right click C drive, click Properties.
    Look under File System.
    If you need to change:

    Pro must also have Simple File Sharing disabled:

    EFS is very good at what it does and there is no back door.
