Brian;
You are NOT "good to go" after this fix.
It is a good idea to turn off Messenger Service if the service is not
needed.
However, you have manages to stop the symptoms leaving the real
problem.
The real problem is the unprotected ports.
To protect the computer you need a firewall.
Either the provided Internet Connection Firewall or a 3rd party
firewall.
