Applications no longer work

Sounds kinda like you've got a trojan using you in a dos
attack or something similar; however if everyone is
declaring you clean that is hopefully not the case.

I also vaguely remember something about a recent XP update
(from microsoft) that caused slow down issues on some
systems (though I've not seen it on mine (whew)). Perhaps
a piece of your software is somehow incompatible with a
recent update. If it was me I'd start uninstalling
updates and hope you can track it down, then update all
your software and hardware drivers and load the ms updates
back on slowly and see if it's gone. Don't you just love
doing microsoft's software testing for them?
