I'm *really* frustrated with these things. I have not
knowingly installed/downloaded any ad-ware. I have
disabled the windows Messenger App. When you say stop the
service, what exactly does that mean. I am not subscribed
to any. I do have a firewall.
A service is a special kind of Windows program, that is started by the OS and
runs in the background. Windows NT and later versions have a lot of services,
including a "Messenger" service that has no relation to the Messenger application.
To control what services are running and when they are started (be careful!),
use the "Service" applet in the control pannel (or in the computer administration
tools for WinXP).
