Actually, you may well likely have been "infected" with one
or more "Adbot" programs, more commonly called Spyware.
Download Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com (although most
large software repositories like www.download.com should
have it), install it, run its updater, and then have it
scan your system. It always finds something, and let it
delete everything it finds. Although there are things like
Gator and Precision Time that some people think are useful,
you should purge your system of all these types of programs.
Also, you should download either Mozilla or Phoenix (now
called MozillaFirebird) from ftp://ftp.mozilla.org and use
one of these guys for your standard Browser, especially if
you tend to spend a lot of web time away from the major web
sites -- IE is hopelessly prone to exploits. Once you have
your alternative browser working and are comfortable with
it, go into IE --> Tools --> Internet Options --> Security
and then crank all security options to High.
