I assume you don't have a hardware router there. Are you restricted on DLs
*only* w/ IE? IOW, will an FTP client, maybe a music service like
MusicMatch, Rhapsody, ahhh... Norton Anti-Virus update, whaever, will ANY of
these work normally and download their files/updates? It would be helpful
to isolate this either to IE exclusively, OR, determine if it affects other
apps. You could try installing Opera or Netscape Navigator too, esp. since
they use the same protocol (HTTP), just to see what happens..
Here another thing I'd like you to do:
1) Start->Run->type "cmd" (no quotes), should open a command window.
2) At the prompt type C:>telnet <domain-name> 80
So, for example, if you wanted to DL the file associated with the following
link:
http://www.bootitng.com/downloads/bootitng.zip
You would type C:>telnet www.bootitng.com 80
This will establish an HTTP connection (the same one used by IE) to the
website, but over the telnet application. This will allow us to *see* the
traffic and look for errors or anything unusual. Once connected, you won't
see anything, not even a cursor, just a blank screen. Don't worry, the http
server is now waiting for further commands, which we will do next. Btw, if
you take too long on the next step, if may timeout, in that case, just
repeat.
4) Now you'll have to do the next part *blind*, there will be NO keyboard
feedback as you type, but I assure you, input is being accepted.
GET /downloads/bootitng.zip
...followed by TWO carriage returns.
If you find this difficult to do w/o syntax errors, you might want to type
the commands in notepad, copy, then choose the System menu from the command
window to Paste.
If the file can be DL'ed, you should see a long response of characters,
some printable, some not, that's the file itself being transferred! If you
can't DL, then I'm expecting to see an error message and/or code instead.
THAT'S WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR! IE may be *masking* the real source of the
problem w/ a generic error message, and if I can see the ORIGINAL error
message or code, we might be able to determine the specific problem.
It's no guarantee, but what I would do if in your shoes.
HTH
Jim
You might even want to type the commands in notepad, copy, then choose the
System menu from the command window to Paste, it will prevent syntax errors.
Once types (or pasted)
