I've now got XP's firewall activated (my ISP said it had
to be inactivated, but I figured I'd try it anyways...).
I've got IE and windows messanger running, and haven't
gotten any pop-ups. (I usually do when I check my
hotmail, and have actually seen one blocked for
messanger).
