firewall

I'm not sure if I should be asking this question to this
Microsoft newsgroup -- or a Dell newsgroup. Please give
me your opinon.

I am using a Dell Insipiron 8200 with the built in
Actiontec MD56ORD V92MDC modem (56K modem). My ISP is
American Online.

Here is my question:

I am trying to set up the firewall that Windows XP
provides. However, I can't seem to get it to work.

I go to Control Panel/Network Connections and therein
lies the problem.

Strangely enough, in the top window labeled "Dial Up,"
American Online is listed as "disconnected," and I can't
enable the firewall.

However, in the lower window (labeled "LAN or High Speed
Internet,") the connection labeled "1394 Connection and
1394 Net Adapter" is listed as "enabled," even though I
am using a dial-up.

And, for some reason, I *am* able to enable the firewall
for the 1394 Connection.

But since I don't think I am using this connection, I
don't think I am actually firewalled.

So, am I actually using a "1394 Net Adapter" even though
I am using a dial-up? And therefore am I actually
firewalled? Why is AOL listed as "disconnected" even
though I am clearly using it as my ISP?

Maybe there is something about "1394 Net Adapter" that I
don't know.

My only goal is to activate the firewall.

Thanks...

The problem is that American Online" is listed
as "disconnected" in my Dial-Up Window.

I *can* get it to work for the 1394 Connection/
