Microsoft XP's ICF program is your first line of defense
against hackers. I know. Our computer was hacked thru
the "Guest" account and subsequently several security
templates were removed which effectively shutdown our
ability to provide, change or delete passwords. After
accessing this support site, I discovered MBSA, an
analyzer you can download from Microsoft. It provided a
wealth of information about the "holes" that were
available to the attackers. Although this is a very good
tool I still was unable to recover my security templates
and subsequently reinstalled XP. This process of
reinstallation came at the cost of manually setting up
several applications.
In summary, we used ICF until be deployed an external
firewall that connects between our cable modem and our
computer. In addition, we disabled the "guest" account
and are using strong passwords on all user accounts.
Most importantly, as a last option, we've created System
Restore points before ANY change to our operating system,
root drive, and hardware additions.
I don't pretend to have the answers. I do, however,
contend that you must continue to stay abreast of
security issues to be prepared. If you don't, a hacker
will most certainly take advantage of you and do the
unthinkable.
Respectfully, Richard
