help: disappearing docs from desktop

Any suggestions? I came back to my computer to find
several documents and icons I had on my desktop gone. I
wasn't doing anything outside of running a few apps. My
computer didn't freeze. My recycle bin is empty. They
were there and then they were gone! Any suggestions?
