Q811493 Update

I allowed Windows XP to auto install the Q811493 update
which said that it would fix a security vulnerability in
the windows kernel. After which my computer ran
increadibly slow, frequently freezing or pausing for up to
a minute for pretty much any programs I ran. I removed
the update and things seem to have returned to normal. Do
I really need this update? Are their known bugs with it?
Are there any workarounds or fixes for it?
