Can't boot after critical update 311493

I installed the critical update 311493 this afternoon and
when asked to restart it failed and I could not boot
except to safe mode or to choose the "go to last known
configuration" choice. I went to the last known
configuration just so I could boot and back up my data.
This is the SECOND critical update failure that caused
system failure or crashes of other "Microsoft" programs
so I have disabled the "Windows Update" feature. I
cannot continue to try to figure out what to do with my
limited knowledge of these things. I wish to report this
to Microsoft but can't find where. I, too, have loved
and supported Microsoft products for years but this year
has been soooo bad with the update files for my newly
installed Windows XP Home Edition it has really shaken my
confidence in the quality of Microsoft products. What a
shame. Can anyone help with this?
