Password protected file now Access Denied!

HELP!
A few months ago I put a password on a file containing my backup files
for a little added security. I did this using WinXP Pro not a third
party program. With a right click on the file, and going into the
advanced section, I got myself in to trouble.The file was located on a
second hard drive and formatted NTFS. Shortly after I set the backup
file with a password my primary HD crashed and I had to reformat. All
of my important documents were backed up in that password protected
file though, so I felt secure. Now however, when I try to open that
password protected file I get an error saying access denied. It
doesn't even give the option of putting in a password. I have gone
into the properties and done what I could to try and retrieve the file
such as setting the file as a shared file etc., but to no avail. I
keep getting access denied. Was the password actually stored on the
HD that was reformated? Shouldn't the file open even if it was moved
to another computer with the appropriate password? Are these files
gone forever? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
