English changed to German after freeze

hello I have been running windows xp for about a 2weeks
after upgrading from windows ME every thing was working
fine until today 4/2/03, when my xp froze and I had to
reboot it rebooted to dos and I immidiately new something
was wrong because the letters were mixed with yellow
(yellow and white) instead of plain white letters and it
looked as if there was a cursor or something flicking in
the background, the first page was english,the next page
after memory count was German, It then booted to checking
the hard drive for error message it was all in German
after logging on to windows it was in German the only
thing I new to do was restore to earlier date that is how
I am able to write for HELP HELP HELP, WHAT HAPPENED AND
HOW DO I KEEP IT FROM HAPPENING AGAIN
