Bryan,
First of all XP is an admin dream compared to the 95 kernal operating
systems. The problem here is knowledge and you need to gain it. I suggest
one of 2 ways, requesting some training or start playing.
You can get this stuff to work but yes you will need to change the
workstation security settings. NT is set to allow users to have specific
rights and your software is requesting more so you need to provide this.
One other quick note, you may need to provide rights to the files system
and/or the registry. You will have to troubleshoot this I suggest calling
the software vendors and find out what you need to do to make it work
(sometimes they are not helpful because they want you to upgrade). Really
the problem lies within the software. The other thing is to list the apps
maybe someone here already knows how to fix your problem but we can't help
you if we don't know the apps.

As a network admin, I expect to have the ability to
> control who has access to the resources from the server
> side. - You have full control of the resources on the server but the
workstation is different unless you run AD.
 Does XP force me to modify WS security as well? - It isn't XP that is
forcing you it is the software you want to run. You can run this software
just fine as an admin and give them these rights(machine would be like a
win95 station then). It sounds like you want to use the benefits of XP
though and limit workstation rights by making them users.
You say that power users run fine and users don't - the difference is
basically this, put in simple terms.
Users = READ ONLY
Power users = FULL ACCESS with out control
Admin= Full Control

Again I would suggest training if you are serious about becoming a good
Network Admin. This is basically Microsoft Security and if they ever add
some Microsoft Servers and leave Novell as most are you will need to know
this. Also NT is the future for Microsoft so you will want this knowledge.
