It disgusts me that they would RECOMMEND this to EVERYONE who gets that
error.. Its like part of their diabolical plan to be able to hack into all
of their customers machines.. Im just happy I stayed with my Lexmark...

Personally I would return it if they cannot support you.
I recall having a number of clients back when NT 4 just
came out that purchased the then new high-dollar All-in-one
devices only to find that this company never delivered any
drivers except for Win9x and eventually posted that they
never would (having lead people on for some time).
I have had servers blue screen from their print management
software, etc.. It is usually that they are doing things that
anyone with common sense about the NT architecture would
simply not even consider doing.
Notice that the MS KB article to which they referred you
begins by stating
"CAUSE
This issue may occur if the driver that is included with the device is
incompatible with Windows XP"
Well, they are responsible for writing and providing the driver.
Their driver dows not know how to correctly work with the
NT family permission structure, and their "workaround" in
their help system link suggest an absolutely unacceptible thing
to do.
If they are unable or unwilling to inform you how to safely
install their product, then I for one would say return it and
remember their behavior.
What they need to tell you is
What keys need to exist in the registry (exactly where
within HKLM) so that before installing their software
you can set permissions on those few HP specific keys
so that the drive install will work.
Their apparent inability to do this only evidences my
earlier claims.
I will say this once more - advising people to grant full
control to the entire HKLM hive of the registry is totally
unacceptible, and makes me cautious of trusting the source
of such advise for any future provisioning needs.
You are welcome to forward this in your support needs
communications.
Good luck, but I bet you are up against a brick wall.
Return it before it becomes a door stop, and save the time.
They are really kool looking hardware but if you have to
give up your machines safety to use them, it is a no brainer.
