encrypted files and folders

Hello, i've noticed that the check box for encrypting
files in xp is greyed out and unclickable, although all
the current instructions at the mircrosoft sites describe
how to use it......only it doesn't work at all. Is it
disabled by microsoft, or is my copy of windows xp home
edition bad?
