Roger, thank you for that excellent explanation. Ok, I will leave the
double assignments then.
This new understanding gives rise to one last question on this
subject. My account is the one that all applications have been
installed from. It might have had the "users" group membership
initially, but if so I must have removed it as it currently has only
the "Administrators" group membership. I'm assuming then that I should
add the "users" group membership to this account, and I am off to do
that. If this is not the correct action, please advise.

Unbelievable as it may sound, your system is acting as
expected. In the NT family of OSs, an account can be
a member of many, many groups. So, when one interface
sees the account has membership in Administrators it is
saying it is an administrative account, while when other
interfaces see it has membership in Users group it then
reports that it is "restricted" or "limited" (why both of
these are used is confusing, but they seem to mean the
same thing).
