XP SP1 or SP1a - Backup of system files?

I wouldn't worry about backing up anything. If your
computer was built by HP, than nothing will go wrong with
the upgrade. If something does go wrong, you
can "rollback" the SP.

I would run Windows Update to see what service packs you
should install.
