Hi
I have this very strange problem where, no matter what I try, I cannot
access a particular computer in the network neighborhood. The computer
is called "hugo" and so when I try to access this computer (which has
several shares) I get the error message:
\\hugo is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this
network resource. Access is denied.
However, from the computer "hugo" itself I can go to the network
neighborhood and access its own shares from there. Only none of the
other machines can.
The other machines however CAN map \\hugo\archive (archive is a shared
folder) and this works i.e. they can get to the share when they actively
map the computer hugo to a drive letter. It's just that when browsing
the network neighborhood, they get the above "Access denied" message
when clicking on the computer icon.
On the machine "hugo" I have made sure that I have ticked the box
"Enable NetBios over TCP/IP" in network setup, and I also made sure that
the services "Computer Browser" and "Server" are running. I also made
sure that in Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), "File and print sharing for
Microsoft Networks" is enabled (box ticked).
The setup for the network neighborhood is a workgroup, and the master
browser is actually an Irix machine which uses samba to enable it to be
the master browser. Normally therefore I put machines in the
/etc/netgroup file and this works OK. Computers on the network then
specify this Irix machine as their WINS server. I do not think it has
anything to do with the master browser setup as all other machines work
fine. My guess is it has something to do with permissions on the
computer "hugo" itself, but I have exhausted the microsoft knowledge
base cannot find anything about this on the web in general.
Can anyone help? Any suggestions or possible solutions will be most
appreciated.
Thanks
Hugo
