Hi All,

Hope someone can help me with this. You should grab a
coffee while you read this...

I am using Windows XP Pro.

I have connected an old NTFS HDD to my PC, and discovered
that many of the files and folders are encrypted.

I have taken owenership of all the files and folders. I
have even used CACLS in DOS to ensure I have full
permissions to access, read write etc on them.

Still I cannot get access.

If I pop into Properties > Advanced, then de-
select "Encrypt Contents to Secure Data", then try to
apply the changes (whether to the individual file/folder
or all subsequent files/folders), I get this message;

"An error occurred applying attributes to the file:
(folder/filename). Access is denied."

And the changes are not saved.

The contents of the disc were originally encrypted in
Windows 2000 Server. That machine died a terrible,
terrible death and now I'm on a new machine running XP
Pro. Someone has suggested I can't get access because I
don't have original security ceritificate from that
machine - but that doesn't make sense because I HAVE
managed to recover other files from the same partition
that were previously encrypted.

So... any ideas sweet sweet gurus?

I guarantee an All-Expenses-Paid-Round-the-World-Luxury-
Cruise to the person who succeeds in helping me solve
this first!*

Liam
