BTW you should not have an issue doing a repair install
even if it is a pre-install, as long as you use the right CD.

The corruption issue was not cured fully even by W2k SP 1,
and I have seen some on W2k SP3 though these are due to
products from the Office group. The code you introduce
to XP when loading this is the same code that when introduced
to NT 4 (BTW it was a back port out of late W2k beta) caused
the corruptions. It may have installed in a way that did not
backlevel some part and the critical errors were in that part.
Or, it may be there waiting. It does not show in the event log
nor with chkdsk. It shows when you try to use the Security
dialog on an ACL that has become corrupted. Again, it would
happen most commonly when an ACL was both inheriting
permissions and had an explicitly set Deny in it. I am not sure
but believe that somewhere around NT 4 SP 5 or 6 something
shipped that made the situation less common - but of course
the way you are using it you would not be able to get that
upgrade.
