I'm not sure, but I believe it might be the Office license you might be
confusing things with. I thought Office had a clause of allowing a person to
buy one copy and install it on a home computer and a second, laptop computer
with the proviso that they were both only used by the 1 person.
Unfortunately, I don't think the OS has ever had that provision.
Maybe you can run XP on your laptop (like I do) and run linux on your
desktop (like I do). Gives me a broader perspective and allows me a wider range
of software choices than if I locked into XP only. Also, it's amazing what you
can get for "free" for linux -- whereas on Windows, even programs to rename
files are sold as time-limited shareware to get 10-20$$ out of you. Programs
with 1 or 2 weeks of development time in Windows will sell for 10-15$, but
programs with years of development time in them will be free -- with the source
on linux. Guess which one is easier to get support and fixes for? Guess which
one doesn't monitor you to check for license usage?...
Good luck...if you like linux, my personal pref has been the Professional
version of Suse...comes with package of 7CD's and 1 DVD (that contains all 7
CDs). All for less than you will spend on 1 XP Home license.
But to each their own...
