Hi Tim,
Since this issue can be caused by the damaged log file in the catroot2
folder, and system can recreate this folder by itself, I suggest you
temporarily rename this folder and then restart the computer.
If this issue still occurs when we go to Windows Update, let's try the
following steps:
Step1. Clear Internet Explorer Cache
======================
1. Close all running programs.
2. Click Start->Run, type in "Cmd" (Without the quotation marks), and click
OK.
3. Type the following commands, and press Enter after each line.
Cd local settings
Rd temp /s
Rd History /s
Rd Tempor~1 /s
NOTES: If you are prompted to answer y or n, answer Y; if you receive "The
process cannot access the file because it is used by another process" error
message, it is normal, please ignore it.
Exit
4. Please restart the computer and check if this issue still occurs.
Step2. Remove the Windows Update ActiveX controls:
======================
1. Click Start, then click Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
Search for the files named iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll
2. Once these files are found, delete them from your system's
"C:\Windows\System32\dllcache" location.
3. Delete any other copies of these files from any other folder except from
the folder C:\Windows\System32.
4. After you have deleted all other copies of these files, delete them from
the "C:\Windows\System32" folder.
5. You will be prompted by System File Protection to insert the Windows XP
installation CD-ROM. Click Cancel. (You will download newer versions of the
files from the Windows Update Site).
6. When you see the prompt "Keep these unrecognized file versions," click
Yes.
7. Return to the Windows Update Site and install new copies of the ActiveX
controls.
If this issue still occurs, please go to the following link to download
iuctl.cab.
518852"
After downloading, please uncompress this file, and right-click the
iuctl.inf file and then click Install.
Regarding the VIA.INS file, since you indicate that you are unable to find
this file in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup folder, please make sure that you have enabled "Show
hidden files and folders". In case you have not enabled it, please click
Start->My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View->Show hidden files and
folders->OK. After that, please check if we can find this file in the
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder. If
we are still unable to find this folder, I suggest us simply use msconfig
utility to disable this item as workaround.
If you have any concerns, please feel free to post back. Thanks.

Kyle Cui

| Hi Kyle,
|
| I have carried out the first five steps in your previous
| posting and now I recieve the following "Depending on
| your connection speed, this might take a minute. During
| this time, you may receive one or more security warnings.
| Review each security warning to ensure that the content
| is signed by Microsoft, and then click Yes to install the
| software." And that is it. Nothing more. The bar at the
| bottom of the window displays "Done" I have returned the
| CatRoot2 folder back to its original title, tried again
| and recieved the same message, as I did too when I tried
| it in a clean environment after accessing msconfig.
| Should I leave CatRoot2 folder with its origianl name now
| or return it to catroot2old as you suggested even though
| it seems to have no benefit?
|
| Regarding the Broadband issue the item was located in
| Documents & Settings\All Users\Start
| Menu\Programs\Startup\VIA.INS. VIA.INS however is nowhere
| to be seen, so cannot be erased. It does not appear to be
| a hidden folder either.
|
| Thanks again for your help and look forward to hearing
| from you soon.
|
| Tim.
