No safe-mode booting or anything required, and this is
what the other poster was referring to, I believe. But you
do stand a chance of losing data.

Your other option that I can see is to use a Linux
Bootable Business Card distribution; these are set up to
be PC recovery/emergency disks that can give you access to
everything if it can be read at all. You may have a bit of
trouble finding one that provides NTFS access though, and
it must be kept in mind that NTFS support in the Linux
kernel is experimental still.
