Hi Doug,

Sure, and that is how it should be done, storing the mdb
outside of the web content area. However, this is not very
handy without server access, and so they often are within
the vdir of the web content. When this is so, then both
the NTFS permissions and the IIS metabase need to be
set to allow write. It was this that I was posting to clarify
for Stephan, since often when one just has a web hosted
on a server the mdb is published just like the other content.

I'm running a similar web site, and for security purposes, the MDB file, nor
its folder, is not part of the virtual directory of the web site.  But I did
give the IUSR account write level access, via standard file permissions, and
internet users can update the database with no problems.
