tried to delete user --- no luck

I followed the instruction for deleting a user via the
control panel. The control panel (system, settings,
advanced, users) thinks the user is gone, but when I re-
boot, the logon page still invites the deleted user to log
on. How do I really, really, really delete the user? Thank
you for your insights. Michael
