Yes, I'm pretty sure it also works on XP Pro [but I'm guessing probably not
XP home]. Note that it is not a true sniffer, because it only monitors
traffic to and from that one computer [unless you own the version that comes
with SMS server].
The advantage to Network Monitor is that it is easy and free. Other free
and well-regarded sniffer solutions that DO monitor other computers on the
network include:
- www.Ethereal.com
- Windump at http://windump.polito.it
- not really a sniffer, but the firewall www.sygate.com does do full packet
capturing, I think it can export to Windump log format for further analysis,
and is free for non-commercial [e.g. home] use.
Note that if you have switches on your network, you'll need to configure
spanning or mirroring on your switch to see other traffic, or use a hub
instead.
