Thanks for the reply, Mark.

I'm a bit confused, then. The *only* User on the system is Administrator
(me), and I'm apparently logged onto that automatically each time I boot,
with no need to enter a password. My original problem is that I can't get
into the Recovery Console because XP is asking for a password, and it's
apparently blank (or a carriage return, conceivably, per your original
guess), won't accept a blank password, and doesn't accept what if I used if
I had set one up when I purchased and first ran the system.

So I'm not wanting to change anything for someone else, since I'm the only
User, apparently logged in as Administrator. See the original posts below
for the details, since I imagine you're replying to quite a few different
threads.

So if I'm the only User, logged in as Administrator, does this still need to
be done in Safe Mode?

Sorry to prolong this, but I genuinely want to understand how this works so
I fix it right the first time, and can deal with similar problems down the
road on my own.
